If you've been looking to have an online business, I'm sure you've seen the hype around ClickFunnels.
I was very skeptical and hesitant at first, and even spent about 2 years thinking and watching it before signing up.
But, I am glad I did. I have used every feature they have to offer for more than a year, so I definitely know the ins and outs.
While it is actually a great product, it is not perfect. It has plenty of flaws and it isn't for everyone.
So, let's dive in and see if it's the right solution for you!
Clickfunnels.com is a sales platform, website builder, email marketing provider, and affiliate manager all in one.
While it is not cheap, it is an all-in-one service that works out of the box with no tweaking needed on your end.
Their slogan is:
ClickFunnels Gives You EVERYTHING You Need To Market, Sell, and Deliver Your Products and Services Online!
I wouldn't say that it is the best at everything it provides, I'd say this statement is completely true and accurate. It really does provide everything you need and is super easy to use.
There are essentially 3 products within ClickFunnels and each has it's own range of features that should really be looked at separately. They are - Clickfunnels, Actionetics, and Backpack.
As most SAAS products (software as a service), Click Funnels comes in two tiers - ClickFunnels and Etison Suite.
The basic version comes with just Clickfunnels while the Etison Suite comes with all 3 - Clickfunnels, Actionetics, and Backpack. Additionally, with the Etison Suite there are no limitations on traffic or number of pages/funnels allowed.
Now, this is a fairly complicated product with a lot of different features, so I'm going to break this review down further and review every detail of all 3 products.
If you want to jump ahead to any section, just click on the link below and it will jump you down the page to that part.
It's a bit confusing because ClickFunnels is the website name as well as only 1 of the products they offer. This section will be about the individual product.
Clickfunnels includes everything you need to create a website, market it, test it, sell your product, and deliver it to your customer.
In the basic version, you are allowed to have 20 funnels and 100 pages total within those funnels. This is plenty to start and test a variety of funnels for your business.
Additionally, you can integrate it with stripe so it can accept sales right out of the box.
Your online business will need AT A MINIMUM, the following to be successful:
ClickFunnels does offer all of these in some way or another. First, we'll go over these items individually, then we'll cover the biggest drawbacks with clickfunnels and reasons not to get it.
In this review of clickfunnels, I'm going to base the web page design based on 3 categories - ease of use, overall appearance, and consistency. The goal is to build a website that converts, not one that just looks nice.
I'd rank it 5 stars in ease of use and overall appearance, but I'd give it maybe 3 stars in consistency.
The reason is because of how difficult it is to maintain a consistent look across multiple pages and funnels, especially when using the pre-made templates.
Let me explain.
While this probably should be in the same category as web page design, I've separated it because this was the original reason I even got Click Funnels. I totally give this 5-stars.
Let me explain.
When I made my first squeeze page, it was terrible.
Sure, it had the basic requirements - a photo, an opt in, some other info.
But, it barely converted.
With warm traffic, people who had already been on my website, it was only converting around 10%-30%.
I switched to ClickFunnels and used one of their pre-made free templates, and my conversions doubled overnight.
Here's an example of one of my squeeze pages that doubled in conversions.
I do want to point out that you can create squeeze pages this nice or even better with wordpress plugins or on other platforms.
What I loved was that a person with absolutely ZERO marketing experience (me) was able to create a landing page with a 60%+ conversion rate and it took only about 5 minutes.
I absolutely love their split testing options. It makes it super easy to compare the two designs and how each one is performing.
You can also choose what % of traffic you want to send to your split test, so you can carve out a little traffic to test something without risking your overall bottom line.
This is something that I really did love. The stats for each step of the funnel are so easy to follow and you can quickly identify what part of your funnel is broken or needs work.
This is something that was completely missing in my WordPress setup. These options definitely exist with some paid plugins, so it's not unique to ClickFunnels, but I do like what they have here.
Here's an example of the stats tracking in a small course launch I did earlier this year.
While you can see this is a super simple funnel and doesn't include any upsells or downsells, you can see how it's broken down and how it all works.
The great thing is, with each person that opted in but didn't purchase, I have the ability to retarget them with a different email sequence to try to get their sale back.
If you're looking for a platform that is easy to use, has a ton of functionality up front and professional quality pages with minimal work, then Clickfunnels is a good choice for you.
It has great stats tracking, page builder, email collection, and quick and easy stripe integration to get you up and running in no time.
Also, you should get it if you have a way of driving traffic to your site. ClickFunnels is not a platform that generates traffic, it works to convert existing traffic into sales.
While ClickFunnels is a solid product, it is most definitely not for everyone.
In fact, it's probably not for most people.
The biggest thing is you should NOT get click funnels if you don't have a way to generate traffic. So, before getting it you'll need one of the following:
So, if you are just starting a website and have no audience or a product that can support the cost of using ads to get that audience, then you shouldn't get ClickFunnels.
First, I'll caveat it by saying that the individual page for ClickFunnels is probably not terrible for SEO, it's just not designed for it.
But, more specifically, the system is not designed for it because of the A/B testing and redirect system they have in place.
Basically, the way it works is there is a URL for the funnel, which redirects to the first layer in the funnel. Then, there is another redirect to either your A version or B version of the page.
And, for each layer beyond that, there is a redirect to either the A or B version as well.
Now, imagine your are Google's bot that is crawling your pages. Every time it goes to your page, it sees a slightly different version of it after getting redirected 2 or 3 times.
So, if you are starting a new site and want to generate traffic through SEO, ClickFunnels is not the way to get started.
Instead, I recommend using WordPress to create a blog which will be excellent for SEO, then drive that traffic to your subdomain or alternate domain which is hosted with ClickFunnels. That's exactly what I do.
My site is IdealREI.com and it's a wordpress website, but most of my squeeze pages and products are hosted on members.idealrei.com which is with ClickFunnels.
I'm not aware of any product that is this sort of all-in-one solution right out of the box. But, you can piece together a number of services and easily have all of the same functionality.
...and it will cost less as well.
But, you'll be piecing together a bunch of different services to make things work, which takes time and effort.
If you're trying to save some money, definitely use a combination of the competitors.
But, if you have the budget and just want to focus on growth, then ClickFunnels is definitely an option.
I didn't start using ClickFunnels until I was about 18 months into my website. At the time I wasn't generating much revenue, but it was enough to cover the cost of the ClickFunnels subscription.
If you don't have an existing audience or you don't have a product that supports the cost of using ads to create an audience, you'll want to avoid ClickFunnels.
If you want to generate traffic with SEO, get a wordpress website instead.
Perhaps you have a really small budget, then you might want to piece together a few services from other companies to keep the costs down.
You could always just try out the 14 day trial and see for yourself though.
Actionetics is one product that "ClickFunnels" offers, but it should not be confused with the product called "ClickFunnels" as that and Actionetics are most definitely separate products.
That being said, you can only get Actionetics if you also have Clickfunnels, because it is an upgrade.
But, what exactly is Actionetics?
In short, Actionetics creates email sequences for your contact list.
A person comes to your webpage and puts their email address in. They receive their free or paid product, but now what?
That's where Actionetics comes in.
You can tag the contact based on how they got onto your list, then you can design a follow-up sequence tailored to them.
Another way to look at it is that ClickFunnels creates a funnel of webpages that entices a person to opt-in, buy a product, then upsell them.
Actionetics creates a funnel of email sequences that a person can go through to deepen your relationship with them and sell them more products or higher priced products.
Just like an iceberg only shows the top 20% or so, the funnel itself is just the tip of the iceberg. The follow up sequence is where all the money is made.
The repeat customer that purchases more and more expensive products from you is where you make your real money.
Overall, I'd give it 4 stars. Here's my analysis
Overall, it's better than other email marketing companies such as MailChimp. Deliverability is high and the emails have great templates and are easy to create.
Sequences are easy to make and intuitive. All you have to do is put the delay (1 day after signup, 5 days after signup, etc), and write the email and make it live.
You can also send to people with certain tags so not everyone on the list gets a certain email.
If you ran a real estate website, you can email all the landlords one email and send all the tenants another email.
My biggest complaint is with the tagging options.
While you can send an email to everyone with a tag, there is no option to send an email to everyone WITHOUT a specific tag.
This is important for when you create new tags but haven't tagged everyone on your list. For example, you have a newish product you want to promote...
You don't want to bother people who have already purchased it, so you want to exclude everyone who has purchased it.
While you can email to everyone who HAS purchased it, there is no option to email everyone who HAS NOT purchased.
There is a workaround to it, it's frustrating and shouldn't be necessary. While it's not a deal breaker, it definitely causes it to lose 1 star off the total.
There are plenty of other email marketing options out there and Clickfunnels does integrate with them. So if you want Mailchimp, Convertkit, Infusionsoft, or whatever else, it does connect and integrate with them all.
This will be the shortest part of this entire review.
Backpack is the affiliate manager. It comes included in the premium tier and integrates with everything on Clickfunnels.
Here's what it looks like
This is obviously for an account I don't use, because the values are all zero, but you can get a general idea of what it looks like.
Basically, once you set it up you just add your products and affiliates into it, set your rates, etc.
Then, others can promote your landing pages and you can permanently track your contacts from opt-in through purchase.
This is great because many other affiliate programs will track users via cookies or other tracking code, but that's it. Clickfunnels' BackPack will tag the contact so any affiliate payments can follow that contact for the life of the customer.
Summary of Clickfunnels Review
Overall, ClickFunnels is a solid product, for the right person. It is an all-in-one solution that works out of the box and has few problems.
But, it’s really designed for people who can generate traffic to their pages. This can be done via ads, a blog hosted elsewhere, an email list, or through affiliates.
You will pay a bit of a premium for this service as there are a ton of other options out there, but few, if any, all-in-one options. If you do want to save money, you’ll have to piece together 4 or 5 other services into your website and work on making them integrate and work together.
If you have the budget and want to save a ton of time, ClickFunnels is great for increasing conversions, sales, and upsells.
